Charleville Castle
While the Nevermore Academy we see in series one is in Romania, the team transformed Charleville Castle in Tullamore, County Offaly, for season two. The team were allowed to leave sets up between filming blocks, making the process easier for everyone as they shuffled between music rooms, hallways, and abandoned classrooms. On scouting Charleville, Scruton said, “When they said we’re moving to Ireland, from Romania, I was slightly concerned we couldn’t get the settings right, but actually, what we had here is a lot of the same sort of forest elements.” And after spending quite a bit of time scouting for the right architecture to match the aesthetic season one established in Romania, Scruton said, “There was a lot of incredible stuff, but it wasn’t quite us. And then I found Charleville Castle, which kind of was remarkable.” From the outside, the façade resembles many other Irish castles, but on the inside, Scruton describes the detail as “extraordinary” with sprawling libraries, staircases, and areas with extraordinary vaulted drop ceilings. However, eager to replicate Nevermore’s entrance gates, production for these scenes had to take place at Roundwood Park Farm.
Where was Wednesday season 1 filmed?
Bușteni, Romania
Most of the filming took place between 2021 and 2022 in Bușteni, a small mountain town in Romania, in winter—lending a bleakness to the already stark shooting locations. Seated in the Prahova Valley, at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, Bușteni was a prime filming location with its 360-degree panoramic views of dramatic, craggy peaks that are the stuff of Gothic novels.
Cantacuzino Castle
Built in 1911 in the Neo-Romanian style, Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni stars as the show’s main location: Nevermore Academy. Until the 1930s, the castle was the summer home of Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, who commissioned it. After World War II, it was owned for a period by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, before undergoing restoration and opening to the public. These days, as well as the many sculptures and works of art displayed across the grounds and castle interior, there are two restaurants and an adventure park for little visitors.
