Alex Trebek’s L.A. Home Was Replaced with This $42 Million Mansion

If the category is “Former Homes of Hollywood Icons” and the answer is “A nearly 1.5-acre estate in L.A.’s rustic Fryman Canyon neighborhood that’s recently been transformed into a contemporary showstopper,” then the question would be “What is Alex Trebek’s old house?”

The beloved and, for many years, famously mustachioed host of Jeopardy!, called the Studio City property his home for nearly 30 years, buying it in 1991 for $2.15 million and remaining there until his death at 80 in late 2020. The executors of his estate sold the eight-time Emmy winner’s former home in the spring of 2022 for $6.45 million.

Trebek’s home, a nearly 10,000-square-foot neo-Mediterranean, was soon razed, and in its place now stands a sprawling wood-clad residence of more than 20,000 square feet, which was brought to realization by designer Rob Diaz. The extraordinary spread is available at $42 million via Jon Grauman of Resident Group and Jen Winston of Compass.

Plush fabrics and statement lighting add comfort and drama to the 20,000-square-foot home.

Diaz and his team have employed simple shapes familiar from residential and agricultural structures but combined them in a synergistic manner to achieve what marketing material describes as a “blend of architectural reinvention, artistic curation, and a deep personal connection to nature.”

The building’s materiality—western red cedar, hand-laid natural stone, and copper details—is complemented on the luminous interiors with raw wood, linen, and leather. Artisan millwork can be found throughout, from the wooden staircase to the built-in beds in the bunk room, while a selection of sculptural light fixtures includes half a dozen cloud-like pendants floating above the living room.

Warm, natural materials and native plantings soften the architecture’s crisp lines and sharp angles.

Designed for easy entertaining and relaxed living, the home features a cavernous dining room with a freestanding stone fireplace under a cathedral ceiling, a carved marble bar, an open-plan show kitchen for family use, and a spacious, equally chic back kitchen. Bedrooms are havens of soft colors, rich fabrics, and elegant details. The homeowner’s suite, comprising a large bedroom, a sitting/dressing room, lots of closet space, and a bathroom with marble vanities, spills onto a deck overlooking the yard. The eight bedrooms and 12 baths also include a staff suite.

Other highlights include a state-of-the-art home theater, an office/study, a total of three kitchens, a full gym, and, in one of the two rough-cut stone pavilions alongside the pool, a bathhouse complete with a steam sauna, cold plunge, infrared sauna, and showers.
