The original Pepper0ni and Hawaiian pizza watches that our friends at Time+Tide cooked up with Studio Underd0g in 2024 started life as an April Fools’ joke the year before. Then, they turned into a very real, very tasteful, and very successful collaboration. They toured the world through a series of pizza parties and finished with a one-off Half ‘N’ Half piece that raised $17,000 for the Mary’s Meals charity. Clear the table, do the dishes, and be done with it? Wrong. People always want seconds, especially when it involves pizza. So here’s the second and final serving. Did Studio Underd0g and Time+Tide do a good job? I mean, you get a Burnt Pepper0ni and, while it’s nothing fancy like a Quattro Stagioni, it’s hard to go wrong with a Classic Cheese, right? Let’s take a bite and find out.
Goofy is what you expect from the founder of Studio Underd0g, Richard Benc. And if you know Andrew McUtchen of Time+Tide, you know he’s also in touch with his inner goofball. This resulted in the first pizza-themed watches, the Pepper0ni and Hawaiian. Now there’s a second and final serving, the Burnt Pepper0ni and Classic Cheese.
Studio Underd0g and Time + Tide serve a Burnt Pepper0ni and a Classic Cheese pizza
The pizza-themed watch is back by popular demand. Although the kitchen was closed, wherever Andrew went, people asked about the pizza watches. It wasn’t in a polite, nostalgic way. Rather, it was less of a question and more of a statement — in a “you’re bringing it back, right?” sort of way. So here are the two final pizza watches. On the menu are the Burnt Pepper0ni (01BPB) — a watch that goes unnecessarily charred — and the Classic Cheese (01MPT). The latter watch marks the opening of the Time+Tide New York Discovery Studio. It’s inspired by New York’s pizza slice culture, even showing a missing slice at 3 o’clock.
The two steel pizzas share a 38.5mm diameter and 13.6mm thickness. If you look at them proportionally, they might qualify as Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas, but I realize I’m treading on dangerous ground by saying that. In any case, the case shows a vintage-inspired, compact 44.5mm lug-to-lug measurement. Although affordable, the Studio Underd0g creations show great case finishing. The interplay of brushing and polished accents on the Classic Cheese (£625 / US$825 / AU$1,400) reflects careful attention to detail. Particularly noteworthy are the squared, polished pushers set against the horizontally brushed mid-case. The watch comes on an Epsom leather strap from The Strap Tailor.
The Burnt Pepper0ni (£700 / US$925 / AU$1,550) comes in black PVD-coated steel. Accentuating this overcooked look is the charred, PVD-coated Milanese bracelet. Oh, if you’re thinking of taking these watches for a swim, you can. They both have a 50m water resistance rating.
The secret ingredients
Through the exhibition case back, you can take a look at the not-so-secret ingredients of these pizzas, a hand-wound Chinese Seagull ST1901 chronograph movement. Remember, legend had it that Marco Polo brought the idea of pasta back to Italy from China. While that origin story turned out to be a marketing ploy, so many people believed it that a pizza watch with a Chinese movement doesn’t seem that preposterous. Anyway, this caliber runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and holds a 50-hour power reserve when the chronograph is stopped.
If you think I’m going to describe the two pizza dials, you’re mistaken. Just take a look and figure out the toppings yourself. Can you smell the burnt salami?
The Burnt Pepper0ni and Classic Cheese will be available exclusively through the three Time+Tide Discovery Studios. Make sure to attend the pizza party on February 26th in New York City, USA, and on February 27th in Melbourne, Australia. The first UK serving will take place on March 7th at the British Watchmakers’ Day Event. Following these events, the watches will be available for public purchase starting the day after each event in the respective country — February 27th in the US, February 28th in Australia, and March 8th in the UK. Get ’em while they’re hot!
