One of Ferrari’s most famous names is back.
The Italian sports car maker just unveiled its latest sports car, the 849 Testarossa. The youngest Prancing Horse will replace the outgoing SF90, and will feature an electrified powertrain that makes well over 1,000 hp.
The return of the Testarossa name shouldn’t come as a complete shock. Earlier this year, the Maranello-based automaker won back the rights to the Testarossa name. The E.U.’s General Court ruled that the Italian marque had wrongly been stripped of the rights to the trademark in 2023, despite not having released a Testarossa since 1996 (the company has used the name for over 70 years). Companies love to protect their I.P., but the fact that Ferrari was actively trying to get the rights back suggested something might be in the works.

And now we know what that something was. The 849 Testarossa—which will be available as a coupe or spider with a retractable top—sports a sleek yet aggressive look in line with the rest of the brand’s current lineup, in particular the F80 and 296. It features a sharp, beak-like front end and smooth, flowing lines that culminate in a pair of flipped-up tails coming off the rear. It’s refreshing to see a modern-day revival that isn’t weighed down by nostalgic details, though a reinterpretation of the Testarossa’s iconic “cheese graters” wouldn’t have been unappreciated.
Inside, the latest Prancing Horse features a more pared-down style that you’ll find on other sports and supercars. The two-seater’s streamlined cabin doesn’t feature the infotainment touchscreen that can be found in nearly every other car currently on the market. That doesn’t mean the 849 Testarossa is completely free of screens, though. The gauge cluster tucked in behind the steering wheel is digital, along with a small screen for the passenger.

The lack of side strakes isn’t all that separates the new Testarossa from the last Ferrari to bear the name. While the beloved poster car of the 1980s was powered by a V-12, the new version has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. That mill is accompanied by a trio of electric motors, though, two up front and one in the back. The setup combines to produce an extremely 1,036 hp—819 hp comes from the engine, 217 hp from the electric motors, which is 50 hp more than the SF90. All that grunt is split between all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The car is also a plug-in hybrid and offers up to 16 miles of electric-only driving (at speeds of up to 81 mph) courtesy the hybrid system’s 6.5-kWh battery pack.
Unsurprisingly, a car as powerful as the 849 Testarossa is also plenty fast. Ferrari says its latest can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 2.3 seconds, zero to 124 mph in 6.3 seconds, and hit a top speed of 200 mph. Don’t be surprised if it’s even faster, though. The SF90 was capable of doing the former in two seconds flat. In testing, the 849 Testarossa circled Ferrari’s Fiorano track in 1:17.5 minutes, which was a second-and-a-half faster.

Ferrari has yet to say how much the 849 Testarossa costs, but something north of the SF90’s $525,000 (and $575,000 for the spider) starting cost seems likely. Deliveries won’t begin until next year, but the automaker has already opened up the order books for the vehicle.
