Inside a $6M Brooklyn Carriage House Reimagined by an Architect Couple

In the heart of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, a 19th-century carriage house and stable have been given a second life—one that blends history, design, and a little bit of magic. Once rundown and divided into four apartments, this 4,000-square-foot live/work compound was transformed over 18 months by its architect owners, Colin Faber and Leni Niemegeers-Faber, into a family home that feels both modern and timeless.

The duo is the founding partners of SHED Studio, a multi-disciplinary design firm that launched in 2003. Colin, a Pratt Institute–trained architect, and Leni, who studied architecture at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, bought the property in 2009. They ran the entire renovation themselves, living on-site while guiding a crew of 12. Now, with their recent move to Vancouver, the property is on the market for just under $6 million with Corcoran’s Linda Peng, Dwayne Powell, and Christian T. Powers.

Set on a 131-foot-deep lot, the spread includes a 25-foot-wide main house, a two-car garage, and a 25-foot-wide guesthouse and spa tucked into the rear garden, making it feel more like a private Brooklyn estate than a city pad. Step inside, and the attention to detail is evident everywhere. Radiant-heated walnut floors, yellow-leaf heart pine beams, reclaimed sequoia, exposed brick, hot-rolled steel, Venetian plaster… the list goes on.

At the heart of it all, a floating staircase—crafted with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery—suspends between masonry and exposed studs, leading to a bright, airy interior with three wood-burning fireplaces. The ground floor flows effortlessly: honed concrete floors lead to a cozy den with a cast-iron stove, and walls of glass open directly onto a lush private garden.

Upstairs, a chef’s kitchen lined with walnut cabinetry and equipped with a wood-fired pizza oven anchors the open-plan second floor. The bedrooms and bathrooms are full of thoughtful touches, from vintage copper tubs to inventive hidden slot drains and full-height glass panels that make bathing feel like a spa retreat.

Speaking of retreats, the garden leads to a two-wing guesthouse. One side is a sunlit studio with sliding doors onto the garden; the other is a Japanese-inspired spa with a hinoki soaking tub, steam room, slate shower, and radiant-heated floors.
