An Elegant Greek Revival Mansion in Dallas Lists for $28.5 Million

When a Dallas businessman purchased a sprawling estate in the genteel Preston Hollow neighborhood in 2022, he didn’t buy just 3.25 acres of prime residential acreage but a legacy.

The Greek Revival mansion was custom built in the 1980s for the late oil and gas tycoon Cary Maguire. A well-connected and dedicated philanthropist, Maguire was known to entertain a slew of presidents and international political dignitaries, including George H.W. and George W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Margaret Thatcher, and Vaclav Klaus, making the stately Park Lane spread one of the Big D’s most illustrious.

The buyer’s initial plan was to rejigger the floor plan, add some square footage, and modernize the infrastructure. Midway through the process, which was expected to take about two-and-a-half years, business interests unexpectedly took the homeowner out of state. Rather than abandon the project, a new plan was hatched to finish the renovations and then sell the residence. Now, with the comprehensive overhaul recently completed, the reborn trophy has become available at $28.5 million via Faisal Halum of Compass.

Beyond the vast motor court and the six-columned portico, the imposing four-bedroom and nine-bath dwelling’s 20-plus rooms span nearly 21,000 square feet over three floors serviced by both stairs and a newly installed elevator. Four spacious bedrooms, each with a private bath, are complemented by five powder rooms, eight fireplaces, and four wet bars.

The foyer, with its honed marble checkerboard floor and elegant curved staircase, is flanked by formal living and dining rooms, both with a fireplace, and the latter adorned in bucolic scenic wallpaper. Further in, wood paneling wraps around the 1,200-square-foot great room with 23-foot ceilings, a massive fireplace, and a walk-in wet bar.

Beginning with a glamorous, Art Deco-inspired black lacquer formal bar with yet another fireplace, one entire wing is dedicated to entertaining. Just beyond is a 35-foot-long banquet hall under a barrel-vaulted ceiling and, next to that, a 1,000-square-foot glass-ceilinged conservatory/ballroom. Six sets of French doors allow the party to spill out to the gardens.

Sash windows drop all the way to the floor in the fireside formal dining room.

Another wing of the main floor is tailored toward more relaxed family living. The main kitchen, joined by a huge pantry and a secondary back kitchen, flows to a fireplace-anchored family room. To one side is the window-lined breakfast room, and to the other is a small home office. Tucked down a lengthy corridor are a recreation/media room with a wet bar and a walk-in wine room, a fitness room, and a four-car garage and mudroom.

There are three en suite guest and family bedrooms on the second floor, all with ample closet space, along with the larger of the home’s two laundry rooms; the uppermost floor comprises a humongous game room that stretches to almost 60 feet long.

Back on the main floor, the homeowners’ private quarters are nothing short of spectacular. The suite is entered through a cozy library with a beverage bar discretely nipped behind the fireplace, while the fireside bedchamber flows into a semi-circular sitting room that overlooks the backyard. Flanking the bathroom are two multiroom dressing areas, one comprising a lounge, a walk-in closet, and a separate accessories closet, plus a glam room, a massage suite with a dry sauna, and the home’s second laundry room.

Planted terraces run along the back of the house, and vast, park-like expanses of lawn at the front and back are ringed and dotted with mature trees. There is not, however, a swimming pool, a summer kitchen, a garden pavilion, or any other backyard amenity typically found in a property of this magnitude. A landscaping plan is available, but those decisions have largely been left to the next owner so that the exterior spaces can be completely customized to fit their needs and wishes.
