Compared to other kinds of motorcycles, adventure bikes are a relatively new concept. BMW unofficially got the ball rolling with the original GS back in the 80s, but it took a little while for other manufacturers to join the party. The trend only recently really caught on, but once it hit the mainstream, there was no turning back.
Each manufacturer has brought out one impressive ADV after another, all to satisfy a demand for more versatile motorcycles that really can do it all. The used market is also just beginning to wake up a little, and there are some bargains to be had. While many of the bigger, heavier ADVs are great, they can be a little cumbersome to ride in a city, so for the purposes of this list we have limited it to bikes that weigh less than 500 pounds.
In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including KBB. Buying a used motorcycle always has an element of risk attached, so please do your research, and proceed with caution. The motorcycles on this list go from oldest to newest.
2010 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure
Price Range: $6,000 – $8,000
The R 1200 GS quickly became one of the most popular leisure motorcycles in the world. Its air-cooled boxer-twin is also fairly simple compared to the modern equivalent, and if you are willing to take care of basic maintenance yourself, it will be an affordable bike to run. It is also surprisingly light compared to the newer full-sized bikes, and actually weighs a little less than some new middleweights. This is a dry weight figure without all the Adventure gear fitted, so keep that in mind.

2011 Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS
Price Range: $2,000 – $4,000
This is by some margin the least off-road competent bike we have included, but it is still worth considering because it is so good at everything else. Over the years, this little V-twin has proven to be exceptionally reliable, as well as pretty fun to ride. The aftermarket for these bikes is also pretty extensive, and you will be able to tailor them to your individual needs pretty easily.

2013 KTM 990 Adventure
Price Range: $7,000 – $9,000
By 2013, the 990 version of KTM’s venerable LC8 engine was into its final model year. Just like the aforementioned BMW, it is lighter than some of the modern middleweight bikes. Part of that is down to the fact that these bikes didn’t have any fancy electronics, which can be a double-edged sword off-road. While highly capable, it is still a heavy ADV and can be a handful once the going gets rough.

2014 Husqvarna TR650 Terra
Price Range: $3,000 – $5,000
This Rotax 650 could be found in a host of different bikes made all the way through the 90s and 00s. So, while this bike wears the Husqvarna nameplate, it has far more in common with the old BMW F 650 GS, which is not a bad thing at all, because that was a very capable motorcycle. It still flies under the radar, and is a bit of a bargain right now.

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R
Price Range: $8,000 – $10,000
In the strange world we live in, the aforementioned 990 was always a full-sized ADV, and yet this 1090 got marketed as a middleweight. In effect, this was simply a stop-gap while the new 790 was still in pre-production. In this relatively mild state of tune, the LC8 is even more reliable, and weight was never really an issue. Today, this represents something of a “holy grail” ADV, with just enough electronics to save you from yourself, without being too intrusive or complicated.

2018 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled
Price Range: $5,000 – $7,000
Over the years, the Scrambler range has become one of the most unexpected success stories of the motorcycle industry. At first, this model looked like a cash grab, but upon closer inspection, everyone realized it was actually the real deal. Unlike other Scramblers which are laser-focused on style, this bike was able to marry style and genuine off-road capability in a way we have not seen on any other bike. It was pretty expensive back when it was new, but today depreciation has worked its magic and is well worth a look.

2021 Yamaha Tenere 700
Price Range: $8,000 – $10,000
Yamaha teased the Tenere for well over a year before it was eventually launched in Europe. It was exactly the right bike at exactly the right time, lighter and more capable than any other ADV at the time, and equally adept at touring. For a time, these bikes were in such high demand that they were selling for well over the usual retail price. The market has finally cooled a little, and even at this relatively high price, it is worth consideration.

2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660
Price Range: $6,000 – $8,000
The Tenere forced answers out of all the big manufacturers, but it was Aprilia – a very small manufacturer compared to Yamaha – that had the best answer. Somehow, Aprilia was able to pack more tech features into the Tuareg, yet still keep the bike even lighter than the Tenere. It has also been hit significantly harder by depreciation, and represents fantastic value on the used market.

2023 Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure ABS
Price Range: $4,000 – $6,000
The KLR is more of a dual-sport with touring accessories than an actual ADV, but what you get here is far more valuable, and that is a built-in community. The KLR is an institution, and represents one of the most accessible off-road capable bikes for travel. It is slow and vibrates a fair bit, but at this price it offers incredible bang for your buck.

2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800
Price Range: $6,000 – $8,000
In an effort to get as much tech packed into this middleweight, Suzuki inadvertently gave the 800DE the weight of a full-size ADV. The base model, with its alloy wheels, is not quite as off-road-ready, but a little lighter. It still offers enough off-road capability to handle the odd dirt road shortcut, and might well be a better option for those looking to spend more time traveling or commuting on paved roads.
