Who else remembers when Tesla promised we’d get a nice and affordable version of its supercars? Just me? Well, the only morsel of affordability we’ll be seeing is the Model Y Standard and the Model 3 Standard, both of which have people’s heads spinning. Okay, I want to focus on the Model Y Standard right now, mainly because this Reddit thread fell into my lap, and I’m down the rabbit hole. With this newest and most basic version, you get nice things in theory, but not all the way nice. You’ll see what I’m saying below. I promise.
Hold Onto Your Horses, Tesla Model Y Standard Is Here…
So the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 both saw some interesting changes and news this past week. The Model Y gets a Standard version, which essentially includes everything you’d expect in your car, just with a less elegant twist. A Redditor posted a rant about how bad the SUV looked compared to the higher-end version, and noted cheap-feeling materials, a sealed-off sunroof, and FSD that isn’t possible (unless you spend another $8,000).
What the commenter states is “I would suggest anyone who is looking to buy a new Model Y at the moment to just spend the extra $5000 or more to get the premium features, or if you are on a budget, just wait a few years to snag a used one for less than what this costs right now.” I agree wholeheartedly, tbh. Why buy the car if it’s kind of crappy?
Quantity Over Quality?
You know the old saying, “quality over quantity.” Tesla switched it and instead chose quantity > quality. The design elements inside the Standard version feel lackluster, and, thanks to a disgruntled Redditor, we have a front-row seat to the awkwardness. The sealed sunroof and cloth cupholders would be enough to make me return the darn thing, as would the FSD being an additional $8,000; I’d take my money elsewhere. As would most of us.
You also want to remember that the Model Y Standard costs $39,990, so even at that MSRP, there’s no reason to seal off the sunroof. Let me out!
