Those looking to make a tree change to Virginia‘s countryside are in luck. A huge estate in the foothills of the Southwest Mountains just came to market for $19.9 million. Ann Hay Hardy of Frank Hardy Sotheby’s International Realty holds the listing.
Located in the rural enclave of Keswick, about 20 minutes from Charlottesville, Eldon Farm is a true triple threat, combining a rich history with architectural pedigree and scenic beauty. The 372-acre spread dates back to 1715, but the main house has been renovated and the other historic buildings restored by notable designers, such as Suzanne Kasler and Amy Morris. Architect Gil Schafer also designed a lodge for the property that was completed in 2024.
Keswick is, of course, full of large estates; many were plantations in the 18th century, but have since been transformed. Similarly, Charlottesville and the surrounding countryside are home to the plantations of three former U.S. presidents. Monticello, the primary residence and plantation of Thomas Jefferson, happens to be a short drive from Eldon Farm. His birthplace, Shadwell, sits just 10 miles away, as well. (You can tour both sites.)

Back on the grounds, the Colonial-style main residence is the epitome of classic elegance. A hedge-lined pathway leads up to the entrance, where an airy foyer with decorative wallpaper sets a charming tone. To the left, a formal living room with a wood-burning fireplace offers up plenty of cozy lounge space. Nearby, exposed beams stretch out over parquet flooring in the kitchen, where built-in banquette seating is ideal for breakfast bites. Elsewhere are four generous bedrooms.

Cottages spread across the property provide additional lounge and dining areas for overnight guests, while a bunkhouse can sleep up to 12 ranch hands or other staff. Eldon Office and Eldon Lodge sit across from the main residence, with a few luxury amenities worth exploring.

The lodge is inspired by the southern resort Blackberry Farm, according to press materials. The modern structure has been decked out in reclaimed timber and Roxbury granite, resulting in a rustic feel. Inside, a grand hall with a massive stone fireplace and entertainment stage is set beneath a soaring vaulted ceiling. Further in lies a backlit bar, catering kitchen, and wine room—all three of which can be put to use during parties.
Eldon office, meanwhile, doubles as a “refined gentleman’s retreat,” with a wood-paneled reception room and sportsman wing. Other highlights of the farm include a swimming pool, a barn with horse stables, and a riding ring, as well as fishing ponds, walking trails, and apiaries. Handling bees or not, there are endless ways to spend your days here.
