Super Polaris 70 Yacht, From 2 Italian Builders’ Partnership

In late September, Cantieri di Pisa and T. Mariotti, two Italian shipyards, announced a cooperation to construct explorer-oriented yachts. The Super Polaris 70 yacht is the first design, with each company contributing significantly to the project.

Based in Genoa, T. Mariotti dates to 1928 and is most famous for constructing cruise ships and offshore vessels. However, it has delivered yachts, including Sea Force One and the royal Omani yacht Fulk Al Salamah. Pisa-based Cantieri di Pisa has long had a role in yachting, dating to 1945. The two shipyards decided to join forces to leverage T. Mariotti’s experience with offshore vessels and Pisa’s deeper knowledge of yachting. T. Mariotti will construct all projects exceeding 164 feet (50 meters), with metal hulls, too. However, the projects will bear the branding “Cantieri di Pisa powered by T. Mariotti.”

The 230-foot (70-meter) Super Polaris 70 yacht is a steel-hulled superyacht for those who relish long journeys and adventures. Given that, the styling may come as a surprise, other than the expansive aft deck. However, it actually harkens to that of past yachts from Cantieri di Pisa. Antonio Luxardo, the yard’s chief designer, notes that “paying tribute to and respecting the stylistic hallmarks that have characterized the glorious history of Cantieri di Pisa” is important. It’s not just for the Super Polaris 70 yacht, either. All future collaborative megayachts with T. Mariotti will reflect this, too. Simultaneously, Luxardo notes, all will reflect the shipyard’s own R&D into design and technology and “listening to the needs of contemporary owners.”

The eventual owners of the Super Polaris 70 yacht will be able to fulfill the desire to venture all over the world. Cantieri di Pisa expects an impressive range of 6,500 nautical miles at 10 knots. Top speed should be 15 knots, while cruising speed should be 12 knots. Supporting exploration of anchorages and nearby areas, the superyacht has on-deck and below-deck stowage for large tenders. For instance, four watertoys like PWCs can stow along with two 39-foot (12-meter) tenders on the long aft deck. Further tenders and toys to 28 feet (8.5 meters) LOA can go in side-launching garages on the lower deck. If owners prefer just the garages, the aft deck instead can feature a pool or ball court, for basketball, paddel tennis, or volleyball.

Long periods at sea require comfortable accommodations. Pulina Exclusive Interiors envisions a soothing environment, designing spaces at the request of Cantieri di Pisa. Not coincidentally, the studio is near the shipyard. “Our story and ties to the local area are pillars of the shipyard’s philosophy,” says Marco Massabo, the yard’s CEO. “We like the idea that we’ve chosen a world-renowned interior design firm whose innovative spirit and willingness to experiment we appreciate, but which has its roots and headquarters in Pisa.”

The foundation for the interior design is pretty straightforward. “The search for new experiences and horizons is emphasized by the desire to offer an ‘oasis of comfort’ that is perfect in any setting,” explains Alessandro Pulina, the studio’s founder and CEO. Dark and light walnut, travertine marble, and natural fabrics like linen and cashmere characterize all four decks. They appear in the bridge-deck movie theater, the main-deck winter garden, and a lower-deck spa. Furthermore, contrasting tones “create a dreamlike environment when cruising.”

The Super Polaris 70 yacht should lend herself well to dreams in the guest accommodations. The master suite and four of the five guest staterooms sit on the main deck. Of course, the master suite is the largest, spanning about 1,022 square feet (95 square meters). This is in addition to two balconies, 215 square feet (20 square meters) apiece. The remaining guest stateroom is a VIP on the bridge deck, It’s 646 square feet 60 square meters) and has balconies as well.

With 16 crewmembers (who get 10 cabins) plus a captain handling operations, the Super Polaris 70 yacht will start construction on contract.
