From the dial side, the PAM01729 with a bronze case is more to my taste. While I like the sandwich dial of the Platinumtech version, at the moment, I just like the look of these old California dials. But the rear of the PAM01730 is pretty fascinating. I missed the movement’s debut in 2014, which was before my time in watches, and now they’ve ditched the date and GMT to bring the movement down from 207 components to 161 (though they didn’t rename it).
Sure, it’s not an independent-level of construction or finishing, and it’s not the only skeletonized watch in the brand’s lineup. But while other releases have taken a hyper-modern tack, the Caliber P.3001/10 works really well to show Panerai pushing the bounds of skeletonization in a way that blends the vintage aesthetic on the front. The elephant in the room, however, is the price. The price of the original P.3001/10 caliber in a gold case in 2014 was around €25,000, and a Radiomir Bronzo is $20,000.
