March 2026 Seiko Power Design Project Exhibition

Flying on Tuesdays or Wednesdays is usually the friendliest for your wallet. And the month of March also falls into that category. Excuse me for getting a little ahead of myself. Let me explain why I’m providing these potentially superfluous travel tips. The reason is a watch event taking place in Tokyo, Japan. From March 14th to 29th, 2026, Seiko will host an exhibition called Power Design Project Presents: Passionately and Obsessively Crafted Watches. It’s the fourth edition of the Power Design Project event, and you can be sure that the things on display will be just like the somewhat long name promises — surprising and creative watches designed with an obsessive passion for watchmaking.

The fourth edition of Seiko’s Power Design Project exhibition promises watches out of the ordinary. Undoubtedly guided by their meticulous attention to the smallest design details, the designers participating in the event delved into fresh creative expressions. Having an unwavering passion for watchmaking was also part of their drive and motivation to create original and surprising timepieces.

The Seiko Power Design Project is an experimental initiative that originally ran from 2001 to 2009. Originally supervised by industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, the project has produced unique designs. Seiko revived the Power Design Project in 2022, and in its new form, it challenges in-house designers to create unconventional, avant-garde watches that break from traditional brand norms. Conceived as an internal Seiko initiative, it grants the company’s designers the freedom to explore new directions and possibilities, liberated from conventional constraints and preconceived notions.

In 2022, the project’s theme was “Rebirth,” with reimaginations of seven historical pieces. Recent iterations have focused on “Incredibly Specialized Watches,” having led, for instance, to the Specialized Watch for Club DJs in 2025 that will be on display in this year’s exhibition.

From concept to reality

Last year’s Seiko Collection 1 marked the first commercial launch from the revived Power Design Project. Its design drew inspiration from the Tissé, one of Seiko’s most popular creations of the 1980s. Known for its delicate case and distinctive beaded bracelet, the Tissé became a major success in Japan. Four decades on, that aesthetic returned in a compact, unisex watch intended to be worn loosely, more like jewelry than a traditional timepiece. Created by Yuya Suganuma, the Collection 1 debuted as a limited edition of 500 pieces in each of three colorways.

By the way, Suganuma, a Kanazawa College of Art graduate who joined Seiko in 2021, also designed the Ninja Stealth Watch for the Power Design Project last year. Unfortunately, that stealthy, edgy watch never reached production.

Now in its fourth edition since its revival in 2022, the project continues to evolve. In the 2026 chapter, the different designers again channeled their commitment to the craft. By applying their expertise to the challenge, they have produced a collection of seven remarkable watches. Each new timepiece shows bold individuality. So when you visit the exhibition in Tokyo, be sure to see watches with unique elements that reveal new dimensions. In other words, get ready to have your love for watches rekindled.
