RIU Hotels & Resorts has announced new agreements with ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) in the Americas, strengthening its commitment to child protection. Through its regional representatives, the chain is moving forward with the signing of agreements with PACT USA in the United States and MAIS-ECPAT in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, it has reinforced its existing commitment with ECPAT Mexico in Quintana Roo, in collaboration with the state’s Secretariat of Tourism (SEDETUR).
In the case of the United States, RIU Hotels joins PACT USA at the Changemaker for Protection level (level 2 of 5), which involves the development of structured actions for prevention, training, and the strengthening of policies and action mechanisms, aligned with international standards for the protection of children and adolescents in travel and tourism.
Through MAIS-ECPAT in the Dominican Republic and by signing the ECPAT Code of Conduct, RIU reaffirms its commitment by promoting and developing internal policies through actions such as staff training, providing information to guests, reporting suspicious cases, and maintaining guidelines for taking action in these situations.
On the other hand, in Quintana Roo, Mexico, RIU participated alongside ECPAT Mexico and SEDETUR in the signing of the Agreement and Installation of the Working and Monitoring Group for the Implementation of the Action Protocol for the Protection of Children and Adolescents in the Travel and Tourism Sector of the State of Quintana Roo. During the signing of the agreement, together with the State Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto, RIU’s work as a key player in the tourism sector was recognized for assuming its role in child protection with social responsibility.
These agreements and the strengthening of RIU’s commitment are part of the chain’s sustainability strategy, Proudly Committed, which focuses primarily on the health, education, and protection of children. Since 2012, RIU—alongside The Code and ECPAT International—has developed actions to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents across the entire company. This includes the creation of an internal action protocol as well as the inclusion of a clause with suppliers rejecting the commercial sexual exploitation of minors. RIU has been named an ECPAT Top Member in recognition of its efforts and commitment.
