A Restored 19th Century Gothic Manor in the Cotswolds Lists for $8M

Americans can’t seem to quit the CotswoldsEllen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi now call the area home, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were reportedly spotted house-hunting here recently, and even the Vice President has pitched a tent—or at least parked his motorcade—among the bucolic region’s rolling hills and honey-stone cottages. Maybe it’s the stunning scenery. Maybe it’s the charming farm shops. Or maybe it’s that for the price of a Tribeca loft, you can swan about like landed gentry in a home that is straight out of The Crown or Downton Abbey.

Enter Stanley Park, a Grade II listed Victorian Gothic manor in Gloucestershire that’s just hit the market at £5.895 million (about $8 million). Dating back to 1584 and lavishly expanded in the 19th century, the 11-bedroom mansion sprawls over 17,000 square feet with a ballroom and wine cellar. Its castle-like appearance is enough to impress visiting royalty, which it once did—Queen Mary famously popped by in 1941 for afternoon tea, proving this isn’t your average Cotswolds bolthole.

The house has a backstory to match its opulence. Commissioned by Sir Samuel Stephens Marling, a local baronet and politician, it stayed in the Marling family for nearly a century before being chopped into flats after WWII. Property entrepreneur Rebekah Seddon-Wickens first spotted Stanley Park for sale in 2013. Her initial bid for the estate was unsuccessful, but fate offered up a second chance; she acquired the manor at auction in 2016.

Over the next seven years, Seddon-Wickens led a comprehensive, historically faithful renovation, returning Stanley Park to its former Victorian elegance. Drawing on original floor plans and archival records, she restored the manor’s Gothic architectural features with meticulous care. Today, soaring stained-glass ceilings, elaborate carved fireplaces, and a north-facing ballroom with sweeping views of the River Severn and Black Mountains coexist seamlessly with modern comforts that include a sleek chef’s kitchen, state-of-the-art cinema, meditation room, gym, and sauna.

The result is a home that straddles the centuries—equally suited for candlelit dinners under Gothic arches or Netflix marathons in the private cinema. And unlike many of the Cotswolds’ more cozily proportioned cottages, Stanley Park has scale: 11 bedrooms across three levels, 2.5 acres of landscaped grounds, and room enough to host everything from intimate family gatherings to Gatsby-style blowouts.

““Available for sale as a single residence for the first time in its history, Stanley Park is a truly rare opportunity,” says Plum Fenton of Savills. “Despite its incredible grandeur, at its heart it is a very comfortable family home. The work that went into its restoration is evident throughout, as is the exceptionally high specification that you so rarely see in a country property with the depth of history that Stanley Park has.”

Comfortable, perhaps, but still unapologetically regal, Stanley Park could be the ultimate crown jewel for the American buyer with a taste for heritage—and a sense of humor about their Anglophilia.
