A sub manufacturer with a footprint in yachting has partnered with a sustainable-tourism company offering immersive experiences to create a compact superyacht catamaran for true adventurers. The SEAmagine Brim Explorer yacht concept further allows discovering novelties above and below the surface while being more mindful of the environment. And, of course, she comes with her own submersible.
SEAmagine, based in California, designs and produces personal subs capable of carrying two to nine people. It also builds subs like the Ocean Pearl submersible for resorts and commercial use. All meet ABS classification requirements as well. Altogether, since 1995, its subs have completed more than 13,500 dives. Brim Explorer, meanwhile, is a Norwegian firm operating hybrid and all-electric catamarans that take tourists on fjord and wildlife journeys. Destinations include Tromsø, Lofoten, Svalbard, Bodø, and Oslo. It strives to reveal the Arctic’s natural wonders while leaving as minimal an impact as possible.
The SEAmagine Brim Explorer yacht is a 79-footer (24-meter) that the companies expect will appeal to private superyacht owners and charter-yacht owners. To that end, the catamaran, with a 36-foot (11-meter) beam, can be a standalone yacht or a support yacht. Regardless, while her big advantage is the buyer’s choice of SEAmagine subs, she offers space for other beneath-the-surface gear as well. In fact, the lazarette is a dive center, complete with compressors and a maintenance area. Three sub and dive specialists get berths amid the eight set aside for crew, too.
Furthermore, the catamaran has the luxury spaces that owners expect to find. So, for instance, besides five staterooms, a hot tub is on the upper deck. Picture-window glass along the main deck brings the surrounding scenery inside the main lounge as well.
Supporting all of this, the SEAmagine Brim Explorer yacht simply had to be more environmentally friendly. Charles Kohnen, SEAmagine’s chairman and founder, says the concept “makes deep-sea exploration easier and more comfortable than ever—with minimal environmental impact.” Brim Explorer’s experience with purpose-built electric vessels influenced choosing two 600-kW electric motors. They, along with a 2,000-kWh battery capacity, permit day trips with a maximum range of 81 nautical miles. A modest 8 knots is ”service” mode, while 19 knots should be the top speed. Optional diesel-electric propulsion allows longer-distance travels.
SEAmagine and Brim Explorer will be at the Monaco Yacht Show with more details about the project.
