Nearly two decades ago, an Italian shipyard launched the first Naumachos 82, an unconventional 84-footer (25.5-meter). From the Hydro Tec studio, the yacht was a rugged, long-range cruiser capable of standing up to challenging conditions. Few owners sought small superyachts like this, yet she became a five-yacht series. In fact, the Naumachos 82 ushered in what today’s market considers a pocket explorer. In honor of its 30th anniversary, Hydro Tec is re-emphasizing its roots in expedition yachting with the Vagrant yacht project, based on that pioneering project.

The very name, Vagrant, is a nod both to the World War II British Navy rescue tugboat HMS Vagrant and the free-spirited nature of a seaborne nomad. You’ll find classic features of early explorer yachts, too. The helm, for instance, honors traditional craftsmanship from the wheel to the leather-clad dash. A 1970s-era steam funnel, just beneath the nav mast, and exposed engine-air intakes by the transom further harken to pioneering expedition vessels. Clearly, though, the electronics at the helm are up to the minute, and there isn’t actually steam coming through the funnel.

In fact, the Hydro Tec team considers the funnel the iconic feature of the Vagrant yacht project. It’s the structural backbone, therefore permitting lightening up side supports. Additionally, this allows massive full-height glass to frame the main saloon. Some sections of the glass are wide sliding doors, making for a more immersive experience. That, of course, is the very essence of an explorer yacht. “It is the perfect synthesis of technical ingenuity and design vision,” explains Nicola Camuffo, Hydro Tec’s chief technical officer.

Just as explorer yachts remain flexible with their itineraries to account for weather, their owners seek flexible spaces. Therefore, an open-plan layout characterizes both the main and upper decks. Loose furnishings allow different configurations, and the upper deck especially adapts to varying needs. It can be wellness-centric, for example, with an open-air gym (below), or a lounge, dining area (above), or indoor-outdoor conversation space.

“With Vagrant, we celebrate not only our 30-year history, but also the enduring legacy of the pocket explorer,” says Sergio Cutolo, Hydro Tec’s founder and president. “From the Naumachos 82 to today, we have carried forward a vision that unites authenticity, innovation, and freedom at sea.”
