This Fearsome Ram Muscle Truck Has 650 HP Under the Hood

Here’s a high-performance pickup for those who like to stick to paved roads.

Mopar Direct Connection and Fox Factory have just unveiled their souped-up take on the popular Ram 1500. Dubbed the Lowered, the modified build is in line with some of the great muscle trucks of the 1990s.

The U.S.’s Big Three automakers—General Motors, Ford, and what was once Chrysler—have been building high-performance pickups, or muscle trucks, since the late 1960s, when the Chevrolet El Camino SS first rolled off the line. Initially intended for the streets, the class has evolved to include off-road models in recent years, such as the best-selling Ford F-150 Raptor. However, the 1500 Lowered, as its name suggests, is a throwback to an earlier era.

Mopar, which makes aftermarket parts for Dodge cars and Ram trucks, and Fox, a suspension company, have taken the already capable 1500 Big Horn variant and turned it into a low-riding speed machine. The truck, which is available with either all- or rear-wheel drive, is now powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 equipped with a twin-screw Whipple supercharger and cat-back exhaust system. The new setup makes a ferocious 650 hp and features a 3.92 rear axle ratio, so you can get off the line quickly. It also rides on a Ridetech coilover suspension lowering system, which reduces ride height by three inches up front and 5.5 inches in the back. The system also includes tubular control arms for better handling and traction bars to smooth things out at high speeds.

Neither Mopar nor Fox has said how fast their truck is, but we imagine it’s got some zip thanks to all that grunt under the hood. It also sounds as if it will be capable of all those other things that truck owners want from their vehicle. The max payload is listed at 1,910 pounds, and it’s capable of towing 11,320 pounds.

The 1500 Lowered also receives a slick appearance package. Its available in black, sliver, white, two greys, and two blues, all of which feature gold striping and a matte-black graphics package. Inside the vehicle, the two-row, five-seat cabin has been decked out with Mopar Connection seat inserts and contrast stitching.

Looking for a modern-day muscle truck? The 1500 Lowered is sold through Mopar Direct Connection, which means you can order it through your local Ram dealer, according to CarScoops. The rear-wheel drive version starts at $89,995, and the all-wheel drive version at $95,000.
