Biras Marina Opens in Virgin Gorda

In time for the winter Caribbean season, a redeveloped resort now has a superyacht-minded marina, with more to come. Accessible only by yacht or helicopter, Biras Marina & Resort is the re-imagination of a property that has been in Virgin Gorda for more than 50 years.

On a peninsula jutting into Virgin Gorda’s North Sound, the resort previously was Biras Creek Resort. Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused significant damage in 2017, keeping it closed for many years. Although it had a dock prior to the storms, it was for smaller vessels. The new vision is to attract large yachts for both short- and long-term stays. The marina is particularly for megayachts exceeding 150 feet (46 meters) and drafts to 20 feet (6 meters). Smaller boats are still welcome, of course, with 20 mooring buoys accommodating yachts to 60 feet (18 meters). Overall, the marina provides the services that captains and owners expect, including electricity, water, and internet.

A café/bakery is in proximity to the docks for convvenience. Additionally, Biras Marina & Resort has a free hourly shuttle to Gun Creek, a British Virgin Islands point of entry. “Our marina represents a strategic hub in the Caribbean, being the only marina in the region, specifically designed for superyachts, combining modern infrastructure and excellent services,” says Guillermo Houwer, Biras Marina & Resort’s owner.

Elsewhere on the property, visitors have two restaurants to enjoy. The first to open as part of the redevelopment was Ikigai, which serves Japanese-Caribbean fusion cuisine, omakase-style. Newly opened, The Mangrove is a Med-style open-air restaurant.

Opening soon is a provisioning shop with dockside service for superyachts, specializing in European products. The next phases of construction will see further yachting services, plus the addition of private villas, more dining options, and a luxury multi-brand boutique. A farm, a rooftop lounge, and private event space are coming, too.
